Previous works by Yusen have delved deeply into themes of functionality, sustainability, and humanization. Yusen’s practice highlights a curiosity about cultural influences and their potential to inform modern design approaches, blending cultural resonance with innovative environmental solutions.
Mark
Decks Chair (2024)

Skateboard decks are consumables, often leaving skaters with piles of them at home. However, these decks hold sentimental value, symbolising the progress and memories of a skater's journey. This inspired Yusen to design a chair that not only stores skateboards but also extends their lifecycle by repurposing them, reflecting the theme of sustainability. This work incorporates surplus materials from Solid Floor, combining solid wood and plywood in a unique way. The wood blocks are meticulously arranged to showcase the distinct textures of the materials, further enhanced through specialised finishing techniques. The chair features a slot wide enough to accommodate multiple layers of skateboards, with the natural shape of the decks and their grip tape securely anchoring them in place.
