Yusen Hu is a designer from China with a BA in Industrial Design from Xi’an Jiaotong Liverpool University and further studies at the University of the Arts London for MA Designer Maker. Yusen has cultivated multidisciplinary experience spanning product, graphic, and service design. This foundation has informed a nuanced approach to creating furniture and products that marry cultural narratives with human-centric design principles.
Previous works by Yusen have delved deeply into themes of functionality, sustainability, and humanization. His designs reflect an interest in cultural identity, often exploring how cultural elements can be integrated into contemporary projects. This is evident in his work on skateboard culture, where he merges sustainable design principles with the vibrancy of youth culture. Yusen’s practice highlights a curiosity about cultural influences and their potential to inform modern design approaches, blending cultural resonance with innovative environmental solutions.
Yusen’s practice is guided by the belief that materials and technology are central to the evolution of design, with sustainability serving as a core tenet of his philosophy. This commitment informs both his conceptual approach and material choices, as he strives to balance environmental responsibility with aesthetic and functional innovation. Currently, Yusen’s exploration centers on the potential of recyclable materials combined with cutting-edge processes such as 3D printing and CNC machining, aiming to create designs that reflect the spirit of the new era while preserving a deep connection to craftsmanship.
Looking ahead, Yusen seeks to explore the intersection of street culture and design, aiming to connect with broader audiences and markets. Inspired by designers such as Jasper Morrison and Neri Oxman, Yusen is driven to pose questions about identity, sustainability, and accessibility within the global design landscape.
