Different types of stone
On the first day, we visited different types of rocks, including sedimentary rocks and eroded rocks. Sedimentary rocks have layered textures and often contain many fossils. There is a green area over there, with various works of art carved by artists hidden in it. Among them, I quite like the rocks covered with moss, and the public benches made of them are also very interesting. The combination of nature and man-made also has a sense of contrast. There are often surprising materials in nature waiting for us to discover.

Factory viewing

The next day we visited the stone carving factory. The general process is to use different machines to cut large pieces of stone into the desired size, and then the workers will carve according to the drawings and templates. I found that the grinding blades used for cutting work are like sandpaper instead of sharp. The technicians told us that we need to attach the template to the stone so that the workers know which side needs to be cut. There are also drawings where the cut stones are stored to tell the workers how to cut the stone. The factory also undertakes the renovation of many old buildings in London.

Carving


We spent an afternoon and morning carving. I found it very painful to do this work without a goal, because carving with traditional tools is a long and laborious job. But with a goal and an idea, time will be much easier. The name of my last work is "I hate rainy days", because when it rains, the rain will flow down along the corners of the eyes and the carved lines due to the angle of the stone itself, just like tears. At the same time, the rain will also gather in the depression of the pupil. I made a hole in the pupil, and I hope to put plants in it, so that this object will not only have decorative significance but also practical significance.
